SMTP Response Codes and Errors

Elementary Post Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an internet standard for electronic mail manual.
SMTP is a text based protocol in which the sender communicates with the mail receiver by issuing commands and receiving a response code.

Sample:

C: MAIL FROM:<someone@arclab.com>
S: 250 Ok

In this sample the client problems the MAIL FROM command and the server replies with 250 Ok.

The following (incomplete) listing of response codes and error letters should help finding errors in your postal service settings.
It contains common problems and error messages.

SMTP Error 221

221 <domain> Service closing transmission channel

Fault 221 is an authentication error, which means you are using the wrong mail server, the user/password is incorrect, you need to alter the authentication method or SMTP admission is not enabled for your e-mail account. Endeavour using SSL/TLS if you are sure that the mail server and user/password is correct.

Note: SMTP access in disabled by default on some accounts, e.grand. when using Gmail you need to enable "less secure apps" (tertiary party apps) in the Gmail settings: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

SMTP Error 421

421 Temporary Organisation Trouble. Endeavor once again later.
421 Try again later, closing connectedness.
421 Server busy, effort over again later on.

The SMTP error 421 is normally used for temporary bug on the mail server or a problem with the recipients electronic mail account.
Some postal service providers might likewise return 421 after you lot reached a limit (restriction) on your mail account (see SMTP Error 451 beneath).

SMTP Error 451

451 4.three.0 Mail service server temporarily rejected message
451 You take exceeded your messaging limits

If you receive one of the above (or a like) error message from your postal service server (after you've sent out some messages), and so you take reached a limit on your mail server (or e-mail business relationship). This means your mail service server will not take whatsoever further messages until y'all waited some time.

Your mail account might accept one or multiple limitations:

• Daily mail limit, east.m. max. 2000 messages per day

SMTP Fault 530

Check the authentication (username/password) and enable SSL/TLS (StartTLS) in the account settings of your mail client, if required.
If you lot are using MailList Controller, modify the authentication method to "StartTLS" (Details).

SMTP Mistake 550

550 Requested activity not taken: mailbox unavailable [E.thou., mailbox not found, no access]
550 5.7.1 unable to relay for
550 The email account that yous tried to achieve is disabled
550 Invalid recipient
550 No such user here

You will become this mistake when you try to send an electronic mail to an invalid email address or if you lot need to authenticate before sending an email.
Some providers as well use error 550 to indicate that you reached your send (relay) limit:

550 v.7.ane Daily SMTP relay limit exceeded for customer

SMTP Error 553

553 Requested action non taken: mailbox name not immune
553 Mailbox name invalid

Check the recipient's electronic mail address: either the email accost does not exist or there is a syntax error. Too check additional recipients in CC and BCC.

553 Pitiful, over your daily relay limit

553 Quota exceeded
